The VCL states, "Christopher Columbus’ first discovery within the New World was an island in the southeastern Bahamas that he renamed as San Salvador Island." It also states, "In 1629, British claimed the Bahamas, but didn’t rush to settle until 1648, when they formed a community in Eleuthera. New Providence was settled a couple decades after that, in 1666." These quotes show a part of the history of how the Bahamas was discovered and transitioned into British territory.

Majority which is 85% of the population is of African descent and the rest are mixed, European descent or even Asian. There are also many Haitian refugees who are undocumented and trying to escape the poverty they came from. The main religion in the Bahamas is Christian with small Jewish and Muslim communities making up about 1%. "Marriages are typically monogamous and although divorces are an option, spouses in failed marriages tend to simply drift apart without getting a legal divorce." This quote shows it's important in Bahamian culture to stay married and not break your vows legally. Some of the staple foods are fish, shellfish, lobster, crab, conch, potatoes, peas and rice, macaroni and cheese, and fried chicken.

Some political events included slaves being emancipated in 1834, and free trade in 1955. This free trade was a huge milestone as it attracted many tourists and allowed offshore banking opportunities. "On July 10, 1973, The Bahamas became a free and sovereign country, ending 325 years of peaceful British rule. However, The Bahamas is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations and we celebrate July 10th as Bahamian Independence Day." The Bahamians didn't mind British rule but also still appreciate and enjoy celebrating their Independence Day. I'm unaware of any issues created from historical events in the Bahamas and will research more about that.

A topic I'd like to research more is the wealth. Some sources consider the Bahamas a third world country meaning there is a lot of poverty and low access to affordable health care and other resources. Other sources say there is a lot of money within the Bahamas from tourist and offshore banking. This gives me the impression that because of how beautiful the Bahamas is, there are amazing tourist attractions but maybe the locals have a different opinion.
