The VCL states, "Christopher Columbus’ first discovery within the New World was an island in the southeastern Bahamas that he renamed as San Salvador Island." It also states, "In 1629, British claimed the Bahamas, but didn’t rush to settle until 1648, when they formed a community in Eleuthera. New Providence was settled a couple decades after that, in 1666." These quotes show a part of the history of how the Bahamas was discovered and transitioned into British territory.     Majority which is 85% of the population is of African descent and the rest are mixed, European descent or even Asian. There are also many Haitian refugees who are undocumented and trying to escape the poverty they came from. The main religion in the Bahamas is Christian with small Jewish and Muslim communities making up about 1%.
